Rimmel Lasting Finish VS Barry M Flawless Matte Showdown FACE 1
I know that it's been a while since I've posted; I'm sorry for that. But to make up for it (ahahaha get it? make up makeup ahhh lol) the next 4 posts are going to be part of a series that we are calling FACE. This my friends is FACE #1! So in this series we are going to discuss all things makeup, and more specifically all things base makeup. I'm talking foundation, concealer, powder, you know all things that generally make us feel good. Talking of feeling good, for part of this series we are going to discuss whether foundation is masking things and is it a nescity to feel fab! For this video however we are going to discuss the differences between a Rimmel favourite and a Barry M newbie!
On the off I would generally say that of course Rimmel will be the better choice, especially since I've been using it for about 6 months now and it is bloody fantastic! However, some of you may remember that I'm trying to make my makeup bag cruelty free. (You can find that under the makeup section in my topics list if you're interested). Much to my dismay Rimmel is not cruelty free but... Barry M is. When I first discovered that my foundation was pumping out less smoothly than normal I took straight to the Internet. I wanted a good, matte, cruelty free drugstore foundation. Thanks to Tati (a makeup you tuber dedicated to making women feel good) I discovered that I wanted the wet n wild photo focus foundation! But... I couldn't easily get hold of it in the UK, so then I thought that I would try the Milani conceal and perfect but it was the same story there. I was racking my brains trying to find an easily accessible, drugstore, cruelty free foundation when I came across the Barry M one. It had good reviews and ticked off all of my boxes and at only 5 quid I had to try it. It was kind of my only option.
Okay, so let's talk shade range. As with most drugstore brands both shade ranges are disappointing, although Rimmel has more options they both only go up to a caramel colour. I think that its really important to involve every skin tone possible but that's just the way it is (thank goodness Revolution is setting a good example!). I am the 2nd palest shade (as I have more yellow toned skin: see pictures below) that the Rimmel lasting finish goes to, 100 ivory, but interestingly in the Barry M foundation I am the third palest shade, nude. So for anyone who struggles to find a foundation for really pale skin then this would be a good option.I would rate the rimmel foundation a 3 on shade range, it's just not good enough. As for the flawless finish, it's probably even worse so a 2 for sure.
Moving on, let's compare consistency and formula. They are both designed to be matte but hydrating, both foundations have skin perfecting serums etc on the labels so are designed to be comfortable to wear while improving your skin. In terms of what they claim, what disappoints me is that the flawless finish doesn't have an SPF so I would mark it down on that. As you can see from the photos below the flawless finish foundation is thicker and more mousy compared to the very liquidy lasting finish, however the Barry M foundation is actually thinner once blended. Upon application, I noticed that when you blend the Rimmel foundation in it has to dry down but the Barry M one almost sinks into the skin like a cream. Consequently it is less full coverage than the Rimmel. I would mark the rimmel one a 7 as it contains SPF and is more full coverage but the Barry M a 6 (which is good considering the £3 price difference.
The foundation on the right/closest to the bottom of the screen is the Barry M flawless matte finish and the one on the top is the Rimmel lasting finish.
Lastly, I'm going to rate the foundations on smell and packaging. One of the first things that I noticed when using the Rimmel foundation was its glorious smell! It smells so fresh and delightful, on application I could smell that the Barry M foundation has a very chemical floral sent, it's nice but very over powering. The rimmel foundation has a glass bottle which feels much more luxurious than Barry M's plastic packaging. But they are both chic and nice. The rimmel would be an 8 and the Barry M a seven.
To conclude, they are very similar foundation and the Barry M is a great option if you're looking to go cruelty free, but otherwise I would recommend the Rimmel.
